My Favourite Skincare Products
We all try a lot of skincare products hoping that something we try will hopefully work as its marketed and we will live happily ever after into old (and middle) age with young, firm, even and clear skin. But if you are like me, someone who likes to try things while falling prey to clever marketing of Photoshop, than you know how hard it is to find skincare products that actually work, aren’t crazy expensive and don’t involve fifteen steps. I have finally found six products that I love and actually work for me and my combination skin. And there are two in particular that I now consider Holy Grail which is a really big deal. So what are my favourite skincare products? Here they are in the three steps I use them in.
Step 1: Exfoliating & Cleansing
I use the Laura Mercier Flawless Skin Face Polish a couple of times a week. It’s very gentle and I love the way it doesn’t dry out my already dry cheeks and also works for my oily-ish forehead, nose and chin. The Paula’s Choice products (there’s another one below) are my Holy Grail skincare products. I discovered the company through a fashion designer/influencer on Instagram named Annie Bing. Her skin is amazing (her style is also ) and when I saw that everything from Paula’s Choice is actually reasonably priced, I decided to make an order. I use the Resist Optimal Results Hydrating Cleanser in the morning and at night. It’s gentle, doesn’t dry out my skin, doesn’t make my skin oily and leaves my skin feeling clean. It actually does exactly what it says it does.
Step 2: Toning & Clarifying
Of all of the products here the toner is the only one that I am going to have to find a replacement for. Why? I bought it when we were in Korea and I have been soooo slow to use it. But I love it. And I am going to run out. But that’s life. I have no idea if the collagen in it is actually working but it feels so good to put on and it has a really lovely scent. And a little goes a long way. It is available to buy online but I don’t think that finding another great toner will be difficult. My second Holy Grail product is my new #1 product of all time. Since starting to use the Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid my skin is clearer, more even toned, my pores are tighter and I have less blackheads on my nose. It’s like an Oprah moment for my skin. I use both of these in the morning and at night and will for the rest of my life.
Step 3: Hydrating & Detoxifying
And finally, masks. I know, I know. Masks are kind of a pain to put on and then you have to rinse them off and it’s usually messy. And these are both kind of messy but in different ways. The Origins Drink Up Overnight Mask stays on overnight (like, clearly…) and the directions clearly say to wipe of any excess but there is of course still going to be some left on your face and it can transfer to your pillow case unless you sleep on your back and never move. My skin always feels truly perfectly moisturized the morning after I use it. But! I only use this on my cheeks since that is the only place where I need the moisture. The rest of my face gets the Caudalie Instant Detox Mask as the first step because it gets washed off after five to ten minutes. Once it is dry you can see where your pores are which is both strangely satisfying and gross. Both of these also get used a couple of times a week before I go to bed after washing my face.
You might have noticed one really important product missing. Moisturizer. That isn’t because I don’t use it, I totally do, it’s just that I haven’t found one that I love. So, if you have one that is a total gem and works perfectly on combination skin, I would love to know what it is. I am planning on making a second order from Paula’s Choice and am going to test one of their many moisturizers out and will let you know if I love it as much as I love the other two!
